In 2019, President Joko Widodo revoked a clemency plan, with the State Palace saying that Ba’asyir was ineligible for release because he had declined to pledge loyalty to the state ideology of Pancasila and the Republic of Indonesia – special requirements for terror convicts seeking parole. He was in prison for eight years after being sentenced to 15 years by the South Jakarta District Court in 2011, before he was released in January 2021.
